Russian President Vladimir Putin has given assurances that tough security measures will be taken to ensure the safety of athletes and visitors during the Olympic Games in Sochi.

Putin visited the Olympic Village along the coast of the Black Sea on Wednesday, 2 days before the opening of the winter games.

Later, Putin admitted security is a major concern at the games. He said it is always a worry not just at international events but at political ones, referring to last year’s Boston Marathon bombings in the United States.

He said a security headquarters has been set up in Sochi and will be staffed with security teams from different countries around the clock.

Putin is scheduled to meet state leaders who will attend the opening ceremony.

Putin said he hopes to make progress toward resolving any outstanding issues with these leaders by making the best use of this opportunity.
