Merkel: Germany is not dependent on Russian gas

In her interview with Passauer Neue Presse (PNP) newspaper on Thursday, March 13, German Chancellor Angela Merkel assured that Germany is not dependant on gas imported from Russia, and that no supply problems are to be expected.

“Although we import 35% of our gas from Russia, that doesn’t make us dependent (…) German companies were aware of what they were getting into when they signed contracts, some of which are long-term, and Russia has always delivered”

Merkel was responding directly to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s criticism. Mr Tusk said Monday that “Germany’s reliance on Russian gas could limit Europe’s sovereignty against Moscow, especially on the Ukrainian Issue”.
