Search for jet in Indian Ocean intensifies

An international team searching for a missing Malaysia Airlines plane is scouring the waters of the southern Indian Ocean. That’s where satellites have spotted debris that could belong to the jet.

Malaysian transport authorities said on Sunday that the French government provided them with new satellite data.

It shows objects in the same part of the ocean where similar findings were made by Australia and China.

French officials say their satellite radar detected objects floating in waters 2,300 kilometers from Perth, in Western Australia. But they have not disclosed further details.

Two P-3C patrol aircraft from Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force have arrived at a military air base near Perth. The crews are preparing to begin their search operation from Monday.

Commander Hidetsugu Iwamasa is the pilot of one of the planes. He says it will be a difficult mission as the search area is far from land. Iwamasa said his crew will draw on knowledge from past search activities.

Two Chinese military aircraft are also expected to join the search.
