The US government has imposed fresh sanctions against people involved in Russia’s military intervention in Ukraine.
President Barack Obama on Thursday authorized sanctions punishing violations of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine or for stealing its public assets.
The measures include visa restrictions on Russian officials and individuals and freezing their US assets.
A senior US government official said Russia has to pay a price unless it de-escalates the situation.
The US House of Representatives’ Foreign Affairs Committee on Thursday denounced Russia’s actions in Ukraine as a violation of the UN Charter.
Russia has taken effective control of Ukraine’s southern region of Crimea despite international condemnation. Ethnic Russians are in the majority in Crimea.
