The Spanish government has reiterated its rejection to open dialogue with the Catalan regional president, Artur Mas, about any potential self-determination referendum.

“We can not allow such unconstitutional initiative -the referendum- which does not even fall within the competences of the government” said the Vice President of the Spanish Government, Soraya Saenz de Santamaria, who added that “the referendum will not take place, for the Spanish sovereignty belongs to all Spaniards”.

The regional parliament of Catalonia voted in mid-January, with an overwhelming majority (87 votes in favor, 43 against and three abstentions) for holding a self-determination referendum about the future of the Catalonia region. However, the Constitutional Court annulled that vote, for it is a “sovereign declaration”.
