The Reporters Without Borders (RWB) NGO has expressed its deep concern about the “Information Freedom” situation in Algeria, in an open letter addressed to the U.S. Secretary of State, John Kerry. RWB asked this latter to raise this “crucial” issue with the Algerian leaders during his visit to Algeria.
RWB stressed on the monopolistic practices in the area of public advertising and publishing “It is urgent that the Algerian authorities reform the media sector, to enable a pluralism of information in Algeria” Wrote RWB. “They must respect their constitutional and international commitments, regarding the respect of fundamental freedoms; especially the freedom of information” added the RWB.
The NGO also denounced the situation of private channels in Algeria, and questioned the conditions under which some among those channels managed to get their accreditations.
