El País: Moroccan government asks Spain and EU for more funds to help with migrants’ deportations

According to the Spanish newspaper El País, Morocco is asking for more funds from the European Union and Spain in order to prevent illegal immigration along the borders of the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla.

The Moroccan government stressed that it is respecting its obligations from the bilateral cooperation agreement with Spain, which dates to 1992, even the responsibility of accepting on-the-spot deported migrants from Spanish territory. In fact, just last week, Moroccan Gendarmes have been spotted on the Spanish-side of Melilla, where many deportations followed the massive 200 migrants cross over the fence.

Also, Morocco has been able to drop the rate of illegal migration through sea by 92%, which has led human trafficking mafias to move their operations to the border fences around the Spanish enclaves that separate Africa from Europe.

El País reports disturbing numbers regarding this issue; since the beginning of 2014, over 1,600 migrants have crossed the border fends, which is more than all of 2013.

This number has increased since immigrants started collective immigration attempts, by organizing runs in groups of hundreds, making it impossible for Spanish and Moroccan authorities to intervene.
