Today, The Spanish parliament is expected to discuss Catalonia’s request to proceed with a referendum on independence.

The Spanish congress’s lawmakers are set to reject Catalonia’s plan to reach autonomy. However, Catalonia’s president Artur Mas is determined to go ahead with the referendum on self-determination on November 9th, regardless of Madrid’s decision.

Artur Mas says: “If they say no, they will say no to a law. But they can’t stop the will of the people of Catalonia,” as expatica.com reported.

Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy has made it clear that any vote without parliament’s authorization will be illegal, adding that referendums on sovereignty should be held on a national basis and not regional.

The Spanish Prime Minister also adds that such action would be of catastrophic economic repercussions on both Spain and Catalonia.
