UN General Secretary Ban Ki-moon renewed calls for a mechanism of human rights monitoring in the Sahara regions.

In his annual report presented to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), Ban Ki-moon, while welcoming Morocco and Polisario’s willingness to cooperate with the UN on issues pertaining to human rights, stressed the necessity of having a “sustained, independent and impartial” mechanism of human rights in the region.

This report comes ahead of UNSC’s annual meeting on the Sahara dispute. Last year, a US proposal to integrate human rights monitoring in the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO), a peacekeeping operation implemented since 1991, was rejected by Moroccan authorities.
