Security Forces In Rabat Stopped Freedom Now’s Solidarity Sit-In In Favor Of Al Jazeera Journalists

According to Alyaoum 24, Members of Rabat’s security forces have stopped a sit-in that was organized by the association “Freedom Now” on Monday. This sit-in was meant to show the organisation’s solidarity with Al Jazeera journalists, who were convicted to jail sentences by the Egyptian judiciary.

The same source indicates that around 5 pm, a number of journalists and members of the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH) have gathered to take a group photo dubbed #FreeAJStaff. This form of protest has been widely used by the international community to denounce the arrest and imprisonment of Al Jazeera’s journalists.

However, the group of activists was stopped by the police forces and had their cameras confiscated. These cameras belonged to Al Jazeera’s Cameraman in Rabat and Ismail Azzam, a journalist at Hespress. The two journalists were driven to a police post to delete photos and videos that were taken during the sit-in.

The executive office of Freedom Now has denounced such act, which the organisation has deemed as a clear violation to freedom of press and expression in Morocco, and a breach of the constitution, as well as the international conventions that Morocco has signed and is supposed to respect.
