A Malaysia Airlines passenger jet en route from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur was reportedly shot over Ukraine near the Russian border. 295 people were killed.

Malaysia Airlines confirmed loss of contact with the jet about 47 kilometers from the Russian/Ukrainian border. The plane was carrying 280 passengers and 15 crew. All crew members were Malaysian and there were 154 Dutch nationals, 23 Americans, 27 Australians, 11 Indonesians, 6 British nationals, 4 Germans, 4 Belgians, 4 French, 3 Filipinos and one Canadian.

The crash triggered an immediate finger-pointing between the Ukrainian government and Russian separatists. Separatist leader Alexander Borodai told Reuters that Ukrainian military shot the plane down, but the Ukrainian government denied any involvement in the incident and described the crash as a “terrorist act.”

Ukrainian President expressed in a statement released by his office his deepest and most sincere condolences to the families and relatives of those killed in the tragedy. Russian and pro-Russian separatists denied responsibility as well.

The missile is believed to have been fired from a Russian launcher. The Malaysia Airlines jet is the third plane to be shot down this week in the area after two Ukrainian jets have crashed earlier this week.
