Israel has launched a large-scale ground operation in Gaza involving thousands of troops backed by bulldozers and tanks. The operation is meant, according to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, to destroy underground tunnels that reach into Israel. Tunnels, according to the Israeli army, constitute “Hamas’ terror infrastructure” and the starting point from which Hamas is operating.

According to the Israeli military, Israel intercepted on Thursday a number of Hamas militants who used one of the tunnels to enter Israel to carry out attacks.

Israeli chief military spokesman said: “Our forces, large ground forces accompanied by massive air force support, naval forces and intelligence, are taking over targets in Gaza, operating against tunnels and terror activists and infrastructure.”

He also added that this ground operation will last “only for a couple of days.” He urged Gaza residents to evacuate areas.

Hamas announced that they are ready for confrontation and warned Israelis that that they will heavily pay for it, describing the Israeli decision as being “dangerous”.
