The Spanish government announced its decision to embargo arms sales to Israel. The decision was made last week by a committee made of officers from the Presidency, Treasury, Ministry of Economy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Defense.
According to El Pais, the decision is purely political and is a statement against the Israeli ongoing attacks on Gaza and the severe civilian death toll. Arms trade between Spain and Israel is minimal and represents only 1% of Spain’s exports. The amount is estimated to be around 5 million euros.
The decision will be reviewed again in September over the next committee meeting.
This is the second country to announce sanctions over arms sales to Israel after the UK announced they were reviewing all arms export licenses to Israel as a protest against the operations in Gaza.
