Since Monday, an unprecedented number of migrants reached Spain from Morocco.

As a matter of fact, according to today’s report from the BBC, more than 1,200 migrants have entered Spain illegally after crossing the strait between Morocco and Spain over the past two days.

The Spanish interior ministry released a communiqué about this unprecedented wave of migration that Spain is currently witnessing saying that the increased defense mechanisms recently installed around Sebta and Mellilia are the main reasons of this outbreak.

The BBC correspondent said that the case “is believed to be one of the largest number of migrants to reach the country in such a short period of time” and that “good weather conditions over the past two days have also been a factor.”

Tuesday witnessed the highest number of crossing with 920 people making it to Spain while using 94 boats.

Some early reports from Spanish media blamed the Moroccan government for this outbreak. Yet, the Spanish  government’s “spokesman in Madrid denied reports in the Spanish media that the Moroccan authorities had failed to carry out patrols on Monday and Tuesday,” BBC reported.
