Djellaba Controversy: Benkirane’s Wife Answers Her Critics

Nabilla Benkirane, Abdillah Benkirane’s wife, answered in person the people who criticized her choice for wearing the Djellaba [some criticized the Djellaba’s design. Others criticized the Djellaba’s color choice, or both] while on an official visit to the white house.

Nabila Benkirane said: “I would first like to thank you very much, on my behalf and on behalf of the traditional craftsmen and craftswomen who live humbly from craftsmanship. Thank you for those who stood up for the choice of wearing the Moroccan traditional dress, which for others is only worn when it comes to heading to the market or to bereavement. Thank you for defending the resistance to cultural colonialism that pushes us to deny our identity. Thank you for defending the acceptance and respect for difference. Thank you for supporting what matters over what does not. For those who criticized for the Djellaba’s inadequate color choice: do not worry, we were in a real festival of African colors. For those people [People who were present during the U.S.-Africa summit], a country is more valued by its policies and its situation instead of the attire choice of person x or person y.”
