Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO at Facebook, announced in an event in Mexico that Facebook is ready to spend billions of dollars to bring the internet to everyone worldwide.

He said: “What we really care about is connecting everyone in the world. Even if it means that Facebook has to spend billions of dollars over the next decade making this happen, I believe that over the long term it is going be a good thing for us and for the world.”

According to the International Telecommunications Union statistics, 3 billion people are expected to have access to the internet by the end of 2014. Around 50% of that use Facebook.

Last year, Facebook launched a project known as Internet.org to connect billions of people with no internet access in some underserved areas in Africa and Asia by collaborating with phone operators.

Zuckerberg added: “I believe that… when everyone is on the internet all of our businesses and economies will be better.”
