Spanish Health Minister Ana Mato has confirmed on Monday that a nurse has tested positive for Ebola after treating two victims of the disease in a hospital in Madrid. Mato added that the Spanish nurse is in a stable condition. She was admitted to the hospital in Alcorcon, near Madrid, on Monday morning with high fever.

The nurse is considered to be the first person known to have contracted Ebola outside Africa. She was part of the team that treated two Spanish patients, who both died of the virus.

Over 3400 people have died so far in the outbreak, mostly in West Africa.

The Spanish minister said in a news conference: “Both the health ministry and public health authorities are working together to give the best care to the patient and to guarantee the safety of all citizens.”

She added that an emergency protocol had been put in place and authorities were working to establish the source of the contagion.
