Russian President Vladimir Putin said on the sidelines of the 11th annual Valdai Discussion Club meeting that he is surprised to the “West” not learning from its previous mistakes of sponsoring terrorist organizations, plausibly referring to ISIS, though he did not mention the terrorist organization by name.
RIA Novosti, a leading Russian News Agency, reported him saying the following:
“By the way, I am constantly surprised that our Western partners make the same mistake over and over again. They once sponsored Islamist extremists that had fought in Afghanistan to fight the Soviet Union. Taliban and al-Qaeda originated from these [extremist] movements.”
