Various roads were severely damaged in the Moroccan city of Figuig, located along the borders of Algeria.

The death toll following the “second wave” of flash floods in Morocco’s southern region has increased to, at least, over 40 deaths following the passing away last weekend of 6 people in the surrounding regions of the Moroccan city of Figuig.

The lifeless bodies of 4 people were recovered early Sunday morning by the Moroccan authorities, who used helicopters to reach the region.

Another 2, namely an old women and her daughter, passed away following their clay house collapsing over their heads. The Moroccan news outlet Hibapress said that the two “passed away mainly as a result of staying 24 hours, with various broken bones, under the rubble of their house and not as a result of the collapse per se.”

The said outlet noted further that an” absence of officials” was witnessed in the region, as well as” the inability of the region’s authorities to contain the situation, especially since the region lacks the most basic equipment to contain the situation.”

It is worth reminding that Figuig is located along Morocco’s borders with Algeria.
