While answering a question revolving around “the abolition of death penalty in Morocco” in the House of Councillors, the Moroccan Minister of Justice and Liberties, Mustapha Ramid, said that the right to life does not necessarily mean the abolition of death penalty.

The Moroccan Minister stressed that “there is a score of international and regional conventions to which the principle of the right to life does not mean abolishing death penalty, but it is subject to rules and conditions.”

Ramid further noted that in the wake of the national dialogue to reform the judicial system in Morocco, ” various actors have expressed their desire for the revision of a number of crimes punishable by death penalty and not the final abolition of death penalty itself.”
