Driss Lachgar, the secretary General of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), called upon king Mohammed VI to personally intervene to stop Morocco’s head of the government, Abdellilah Benkirane “from demonizing the opposition and attacking it left and right.”

Lachgar told Morocco’s leading news outlet Hespress that “Benkirane’s media outbursts are blatant attacks against the opposition, and this threatens the normal flow of Morocco’s state institutions.”

“If such slips of the tongue continue, then Benkirane, the secretary general of the Justice and Development party (PJD), is really threatening Morocco’s state institutions,” Lachgar told Hespress.

“Benkirane has turned into a scarecrow, and is frightening all institutions, including political parties, work unions, and various associations,” Lachgar stressed.

It is worth noting that Benkirane’s popularity has increased recently in Morocco, with over than 50% Moroccans saying they are satisfied with his performance, a recent poll on the aforementioned news outlet showed earlier this month.
