Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- The first edition of the Université Internationale de Rabat (UIR) Model United Nations conference, hosted in the locals of the aforementioned university, was held between May 1–3, in Morocco’s capital Rabat.

The conference’s welcome greeting and opening words were carried out by Mr. Pepe Villena Sierra, the event’s UN guest of honor who was on a visit to Rabat solely to supervise the said event.

Mr. Mohamed Manaf Laassili, the responsible of the events at UIR, told The Moroccan Times that “the purpose behind such event is to gather Moroccan students from all stripes to discuss current issues related to the United Nations agenda.”

Mr. Laassili further noted that “the Model United Nations allows students to speak up their minds and meet people from different background and ideologies.”

The delegates who were representing the United Nations member states were divided into two committees. The first committee, which was chaired by Mr. Youssef Gherradi, shed light on the eight goals of United Nations Millennium Development Challenge, especially the ones about promoting gender equality and empowering women, while the second committee, chaired by Mr. Mohammed Limame Malainine, put a spotlight on the danger of the terrorist organization ISIS and the repercussions of its barbarous acts on the international security.

At the end of the conference, the MUN’s United Nations Millennium Campaign adopted a new resolution that advocates for fostering women’s rights. The resolution urges all UN state members to “empower women economically as this latter is considered as a key factor in speeding up the pace of development of any country.” On the other hand, the MUN’s United Nations Security Council failed to pass a new resolution to cripple the growing ISIS danger, due to China’s veto.

The vice president of the International university of Rabat, Mr.Abdelaziz Benjouad, alongside Mrs. Khadija Boudraa, the responsible of the purchasing department at the said university, distributed various awards to the delegates participating in the event.

It is worth reminding that the best delegates of this first edition of UIR Model UN will represent the Université Internationale de Rabat in the prestigious New York model United Nations.
