Rabat, Morocco (TMT)-Today Morocco is celebrating the 59th anniversary of the country’s independence from France and Spain.

The late King Mohammed V returned back to Morocco on November 18, 1956 after he was exiled to Madagascar.

France and Spain colonized Morocco for 44 years, the only period in the history of Morocco where the country was colonized.

Today is a day where Moroccans celebrate and honor their forefathers, those who passed away while fighting the French ans Spanish colonizers.

Today Moroccans remember leading figures like Abdelkrim El Khattabi, Mouha ou Hammou Zayani, Mohand N’hamoucha, Mouha Ou Saïd Ouirra, Zaïd Ou Hsaïn Ou Skounti, Mohamed Améziane, Assou Oubasslam and many others.
