Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- The Personal envoy of the United Nations Secretary General Christopher Ross kicked off his regional tour in a bet to revive negotiations regarding the Sahara issue.

Christopher Ross was received by the Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika yesterday in Algiers, in a meeting attended by Algeria’s “Minister of State, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Ramtane Lamamra, and the Minister of Maghreb Affairs, the African Union and the Arab League Abdelkader Messahel attended the hearing,” Algeria’s Press Service (APS) reported.

“Today, I was received by President Bouteflika as part of my mission to facilitate negotiations between the parties concerned by the conflict,” Ross said, relaying from APS.

“The President renewed Algeria’s support as a neighboring country to the UN process and I am grateful for that,” Ross declared.

“UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon asked me to intensify efforts to finding a solution in accordance with the successive resolutions of the UN Security Council,” he stressed, adding that President Bouteflika “encouraged me in that direction and assured me the support of Algeria,” relaying from APS.

According to the Algeria’s state agency news, Ross also expressed Ban Ki-moon’s wish to visit the region in the coming months in order to “make a contribution to the quest for a solution to this conflict that has lasted too long.”
