Rabat, Morocco (TMT) – The Moroccan authorities have, for the first time, allowed a Salafi organization to register legally. The new organization held an inauguration ceremony last Wednesday in Fez, where it will have its headquarters.

The new Salafi organization consists of at least 50 former detainees who have either completed their prison terms or received a royal pardon from King Mohammed VI.

The organization, named “The Moroccan Association for Dignity, Advocacy, and Reform,” will be led by Hassan Al-Khattab, who, along with 36 other Salafis, was granted a royal pardon last year on the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the Green March.

In an interview with Moroccan newspaper Akhbar Al Yaoum, featured in yesterday’s edition, Al-Khattab stated that the new association’s objectives include releasing the remaining detainees and fostering reconciliation between the Moroccan state and the Salafi movement.

Al-Khattab further emphasized that one of their goals is to combat terrorism and extremism, particularly among young people.

Prominent Salafi figure Mohamed Fizazi was also present at the inauguration ceremony and was appointed as the “honorary secretary general.”
