Rabat, Morocco (TMT) — The Moroccan government adopted this week a bill to raise the retirement age from 60 to 63, instead of 65, by 2021, in what appears to be only an initial reform, especially given the controversy and debate this dossier has sparked during the last two years, including the various protests held in front of the Moroccan parliament to demonstrate against the increase, all organized by Morocco’s labor unions.

The decision to raise the retirement age from to 63 would be gradual, said Idriss Azami Al Idrissi, the Moroccan Minister Delegate to the Minister of Economy and Finance in charge of Budget.

“The reform requires the adoption of a gradual approach, now to be raised over six years instead of three,” Azami said.

“Every year on, this age will be raised by six months,” Azami stressed.
