Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said he is “deeply concerned” about the ramifications of the current situation in the area of Alguergarat, located southwest of the berm in the region of Western Sahara.

Currently, Polisario Front fighters are standing within 200 meters face-to-face with Moroccan Royal Gendarmerie elements, who moved to the area in a bet to clear it of smugglers.

Ban Ki-moon’s spokesperson said last Sunday that “The Secretary General calls to suspend any action that modifies the status quo and withdraw the armed elements to prevent any other escalation and enable the United Nations Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) hold discussions on the situation with the two parties.”
