Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- The Secretary-General of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), Driss Lachgar, said that his party lost elections as it was organized on a Friday, stressing that some people “take advantage of this religious day” to “religiously rally” supporters.

Lachgar also blamed representatives of Morocco’s Ministry of Interior and heads of polling stations for supporting candidates from other parties, without calling by name any party.

Various USFP members have been calling upon Lachgar to resign after last elections humiliating result as they barely won 20 seats, but their calls received a deaf ear from Lachgar.

Lachgar also linked the low turnout in the election to the bad results his party received.

Lachgar has proposed few years ago a 500 dirhams fine against non-voters, but his suggestion was staunchly refused by most political parties.
