Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- Morocco’s most read female opinion writer Mayssa Salama Ennaji has been sued by the Moroccan Minister of Environment Hakima Haite in relation to the trash fiasco that this latter was correlated to last summer.
Last July a wave of outrage befell Morocco following the Moroccan authorities importing from Italy 2,500 tons of what a well-known Italian journalist referred to as “highly toxic garbage.”
Mayssa, editor-in-chief of Efriqia, back-then staunchly criticized the Moroccan Minister for her media flip-flops on the sidelines of a mainstream uproar in Morocco, including asking her back-then to resign from the Ministry of Environment.
The Moroccan Minister lodged a complaint accusing Salama Ennaji of libel and slander.
Mayssa was summoned by Morocco’s electronic crimes investigation police to notify her of the prosecution the minister of environment lodged against her.
Mayssa spent yesterday 2 hours in their locals being investigated, she said in a Facebook post.
Various Moroccan journalists, even those who normally staunchly oppose Mayssa’s line of thought like Elmokhtar Larhzioui, took to her defense, stressing that Haite’s complaint is a childish move aimed to intimidate her and silence her voice, especially that she should have been summoned by the court of first instance and investigated under the umbrella of Morocco’s press code, something that did not take place as she was summoned by the electronic crimes investigation unit of the Moroccan police.
