Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- A father of two committed suicide yesterday in a poor neighborhood in Rabat due to the ongoing financial difficulties that emerged on the sidelines of the coronavirus outbreak.

According to Morocco’s most-read Arabic news outlet Hespress, who conducted an interview with the late’s friends and neighbors, “the suicide was a shock to most people who knew the man, and was a direct result of the authorities closing his soldering workshop,” a friend of the late said.

Struggling to make his daily bread, and proud to not ask other people to help him, the man decided to commit suicide, according to his neighbors.

“My neighbor was a proud person and never asked others to help him,” a neighbor said.

“The authorities are to blame. Why do you close everything without finding solutions to such people? At least provide a monthly stipend before taking such a decision.

“What would poor people, who make their bread on a daily basis, eat now? we can’t eat our walls!” the neighbor furiously said.

suicide numbers could rise if coronavirus restrictions tank Morocco’s economy, as a huge number of the population work in the informal sector, generating only daily revenue.

This is the third reported case of suicide in Morocco that can be related to the reverberations of the coronavirus outbreak.
