Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a speech in Moscow on Tuesday that the southern Ukrainian region of Crimea would join Russia.
Putin was speaking to members of the country’s parliament in the Kremlin.
Crimea’s parliament on Monday passed a resolution to secede from Ukraine and rejoin the Russian Federation. This followed a referendum the previous day in which voters overwhelmingly supported such a proposal.
The United States and the European Union have warned that they will impose economic sanctions on Russia if it annexed Crimea.
