No more name restrictions in Morocco

The High Commission of civil status in Morocco has declared in a statement that citizens are now free to choose the name of their child without list restrictions. However, the choice must be made in with respect to moral and public order.

This statement has finally put an end to discrimination as the country has long restricted the freedom of choice of names. In multiple cases, common Amazigh names were rejected solely because they were not included in the list of names allowed that was used by the civil status officer, in order to approve the name of a new-born. The list of names has been revoked.
