US President Barack Obama and German Chancellor Angela Merkel discussed the situation in Ukraine over the phone on Tuesday.

White House officials say the leaders expressed grave concern about what they see as Russia’s clear violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity.

They reportedly agreed on the importance of de-escalating the situation through the deployment of international observers and direct talks between Russia and Ukraine.

Obama and Merkel also said they would work together to help stabilize Ukraine’s economy, and to support Ukraine’s new government until a presidential election scheduled for May.
