An Egyptian court in Minya south of Cairo has sentenced Mohamed Badie, the Supreme Guide of the Muslim Brotherhood, as well as 682 of the Brotherhood’s supporters to death on Monday.

This move came to intensify the crackdown on the Brotherhood, who has known thousands of arrests after the toppling of Mursi, and the death penalty to 528 of his supporters last month.

Some members of the Brotherhood fear that this pressure from Egyptian security forces and courts could lead younger members to resort to violence against the military-backed regime, just a month before the presidential elections.

Badie was charged with different crimes including inciting violence after the overthrow of Mursi last July, which has left the country in political turmoil ever since.
