The Algerian President, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, has given the green light for the exploitation of shale gas in Algeria, while “urging the government to to take all the environment protection measures”, as reported by the Algerian Council of Ministers in a statement.

Algeria is ranked the 3rd country, after China and Argentina, in terms of recoverable shale gas reserves, according to the latest report, published by the American Department of Energy, which evaluated the Algerian reserves to 19.800 billion M3, most located in the Sahara.

On a related topic, the Giant French GDF-Suez is planing to launch the exploration of shale oil in six countries, amongst which Algeria is prioritized.
