Dilma Rousseff has won a second term, defeating her rival Aecio Neves with a narrow margin on Sunday in a nearly complete count of votes.99.66% of ballots showed Rousseff with 51.6% of valid votes and Neves with 48.4%.

In her victory speech, Rousseff said she wanted to be a “much better president” than she has been until now and that she was determined to undertake reforms and changes that the Brazilian society demands. She also called on all Brazilians to unite in favor of Brazil’s future.

She stressed that “Instead of increasing differences and creating gaps, I strongly hope that we create the conditions to unite.” Aecio Neves, on the other hand, conceded his defeat in a speech made to his supporters. He thanked all those who voted for him and wished Roussef a sincere Good luck.

Rousseff faced many protests lately against corruption, record spending on the World Cup and poor public services including health, education and safety. She is also facing a declining economy in recession and rising inflation.

However Rousseff remains popular with poor Brazilians thanks to her government’s welfare programs.

This election is considered the closest. Dilma Rousseff did well in poorer northern states while her opposition rival took many of the wealthier and more developed parts of Brazil.
