We were once one nation united in everything, solid, defiant to all and welcoming to all. We were once one nation, believed in what was right and fought for it, denied what was wrong and stood against it. We were once one nation, a strong nation, there was no tribal thinking dividing us, no faith divided us, and we were once one outstanding nation.
When other nations struggled to exist, we were the nation the world recognized as a beacon of civilization. When others sunk in darkness, we had the most amazing source of knowledge. When others had no identity, we already had our heritage. We were Morocco!
We lived and fought for freedom, we could not accept less than a free society wherein all components melted together like a beautifully composed symphony. There was nothing setting us apart. Those on top listened and felt those in the bottom, and leadership was a responsibility rather than a privilege. All believed in one nation and not one individual. We were strong.
What went wrong?
We are where we are because our forefathers bled for our freedom and paid the ultimate price. We are here now because they believed in upcoming generations to carry the torch and make the nation even stronger than we used to be. Are we?
All aspects of life seem wrong these days. Problems seem to be piling up in an unprecedented way. These are the accumulations of years of ignorance, selfishness and individualism. No wonder there is a huge gap between all components of the society like there was never before.
What went wrong?
Some blame it on politics, others blame it on religion, and many blame it on people. I blame it on it all. We are seriously lacking, as a nation, an effective system of checks and balances, some system that categorizes it all. Every institution is fully aware of its obligations and cannot behold rights.
Politicians seem to take their positions as a gift from God to fulfill their lust for power and money. They immediately cut all ties with those who entrusted them with their lives to serve them, they love it up there in their ivory tower, and they seem and feel invincible and untouchable. They have their own hidden agenda and personal goals to achieve; the least of them is serving this great nation of Morocco. There does not seem to be a serious independent entity acting as a watchdog and apply a serious and tight control over the work of those politicians. It seems like they are all conspiring against the “We”! Politics never meant to be that way, and I strongly believe now, and more than ever before, that those politicians are a group of amateurs who jumped when time permitted to prove their egoistic presence in the society, and without any deeper understanding of what politics actually means and what is the core of the Social Act.
What went wrong?
Religious clergies have their fair share of blame on how sociopolitical issues deteriorated in our nation. They seem more obedient to their pathetic ideology than the actual God; yet, they strongly defy this theory and claim that they are applying the rituals of the Holy Doctrine in their every aspect of life. Really?! They innovated many explanations to God’s words to the point that they deeply believed that they are actually carrying a special mandate from the Deity to represent Him on earth. They have convinced, or attempted to, many ordinary people that anything occurs in life is a work of God, and arguing back is defying His will and might lead to blasphemy! Seriously now! Religion in our beloved nation has shifted from a Holy Doctrine to a pathetic ideology. Those clergies seem to have sold their souls to Mephistopheles. Fact!
What went wrong?
I will not exclude “We” from the equation and the failure we are all enduring. It is “We”, who supposed to hold the magic baton; it is “We” who have the final say in it all, it is “We” the backbone of that great nation. However, are we qualified for such a great duty and responsibility to perform what we are destined for? The answer is simple, No! We are all sunk in a dark hole of illiteracy, poverty, ignorance, selfishness, superstition, backwardness and lacking a clear vision of the future. We do not seem to have a properly drafted road map for our long-term existence; we just stick to the next five to ten years at best, as if our duty ends once we are destined to leave for chapter two of our lives. We became seriously more materialistic than ever before. It seems to me that there was a systematic brainwashing done to us. We believe anything we hear, we lost faith in ourselves and more importantly in each other. We forgot that our strength lies in our unity and not being divided over irrelevant issues. We do not recognize ourselves anymore, and we think we do!
We seem to forget that it is our duty to act as guardians to our values and act according to the best moral standards, and not according to our immediate needs. Those on top should have been afraid and wary, should we have acted as mature and responsible citizens. We elected and chose them to be up there and not the other way around, so why we believe that it is our destiny to listen and sing hallelujah to whatever they come up with? Why we become so submissive to it all?
What went wrong?
Here are the three major components of our nation that should learn to work together to keep floating, People, Politicians and Clergies. No institution should be above people’s will; “We” are the cause of their existence, “We” determine who should act on our behalf and should step aside. “We” are not commoners in that land and we work for no institution or a particular individual, “We” own Morocco and NOT “They”. Nothing outside this formula will work, tension will rise, and chaos will ultimately reign. No one wants to see our beloved nation going down like a fast sinking ship. Either we learn to work together or we will be held back from advancing.
I refer our politicians to a very informative document called “Social Act” to learn about checks and balances, I refer them to Montesquieu and Thomas Hobbs to enrich their knowledge and educate themselves politically, and to our clergies, I refer you to a very interesting book called “Holy Koran”, read it, you might learn something new from it!
