Tangier, Morocco (TMT)- Around 2000 Moroccan women from the city of Tangier are calling upon the local authorities to open a beach exclusively for women in the vicinity of Tangier.
The said women say the rationale behind their decision is that they want to swim in “dignity, far away from sexual harassment, very common in Tangier, especially at summer time.”
The women present themselves as “conservatives” who “live in a conservative city” [Tangier] and stress that they do not want to “disobey God by wearing swimsuits in front of men gazing at us.”
The group of women stress that “they don’t mind of course mixed-sex beaches in Morocco, as it is part of their [people who go to mixed-sex beaches] freedom of dress and personal choice,” further explaining that “Moroccan beaches stretch for hundreds of kilometers,” ergo “we could have both mixed-sex beaches and women-only ones.”
It remains to be seen whether the authorities will answer favorably their demands.
