Malaysian authorities say they have found no clues as to the fate of an airliner that went missing on Saturday over the South China Sea.

They said at a news conference on Monday that they have received no signals from the emergency devices the jetliner carries that are supposed to automatically send out location information.

The Malaysia Airlines Boeing 777 dropped off radar screens early on Saturday after leaving Kuala Lumpur for Beijing.

The authorities said they have determined that a white floating object found by a Vietnamese military plane on Sunday did not belong to the missing airliner.

They also said they found some oil slicks in the South China Sea, but that sample tests showed the oil was not from an aircraft.

The Malaysian and Vietnamese militaries and coast guards are continuing their search. The United States and China have sent ships and helicopters to join the search.

Malaysian authorities are racing to identify 2 men who allegedly boarded the jetliner with stolen Australian and Italian passports.
