The Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, Mr. Salaheddine Mezouar, will take part, at the head of an important delegation, in the 3rd Nuclear Security Summit, to be held on 24 and 25 March 2014, in The Hague. The Hague Summit will be attended by 53 Heads of State and Government, in addition to the Secretaries and Directors Generals of four International Organizations (UN, EU, IAEA, INTERPOL).

The Summit of The Hague, which follows-up the Summits held respectively in Washington (April 2010) and Seoul (March 2012), is part of the implementation of the new diplomatic approach of the Obama Administration, which called for securing the nuclear facilities and the trafficking of nuclear and radioactive materials in the world, as a priority, in order to face the increasing threat of nuclear terrorism.

Consequently, through  this high-level political commitment, several countries consider, henceforth, that nuclear terrorism is the most immediate and most urgent threat to international security, facing the outbreak of black market of nuclear materials and the risk involved in the use of radioactive and nuclear materials by terrorist groups for malicious purposes.

The Washington and Seoul Summits, which were attended by High-Level representatives of 47 and 53 countries, adopted Communiqués in which Heads of State and Government highlighted the threat posed by nuclear terrorism, as one of the most significant challenges to international security, while acknowledging the fundamental role played by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) in nuclear security, and called for the compliance with the standards established by the Agency.

The Hague Summit aims at maintaining the momentum generated by the previous Washington and Seoul Summits, and calling upon the countries that have the ‘necessary leverage’, to ascribe to this process, a concrete aspect and content, in the forthcoming years.

The Moroccan Delegation, led by Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation, comprises of Mr. Abdelkader Amara, Minister of Energy, Mining, Water and the Environment, Mr. Abdelouahab Bellouki, Ambassador of His Majesty the King in The Hague, Mr. Azzeddine Farhane, Director of the United Nations and International Organizations, and Mr. Khalid Mediouri, Director of the National Center for Energy Sciences and Nuclear Techniques (CNESTEN).
