According to a reliable source from the Moroccan Ministry of Electricity and Mining, Morocco imports around 20% of its yearly electricity needs from neighboring EU country Spain.

According to the same source, this “amount” of electricity costed Morocco 2.5 Milliards of Dirhams in 2013.

Electricity imports increased by a 59% factor in 2013 compared to the two years before, we understand.

It is worth mentioning that importing electricity is part of the ministry’s strategy to lower the yearly electricity bill, as importing it from Spain is deemed, by the ministry, cheaper than producing it locally.
