A total of 16 people were killed and 880 others injured during the Thingyan water festival in Mandalay, central Myanmar, local media said Friday.

The casualties were caused mainly by fighting among revelers who were getting drunk and overspeed water throwing motor vehicles, Xinhua reported.

During last year’s water festival, 12 people were killed and 689 others injured in the region.

This year’s Thingyan water festival lasted from April 13 to 16. During the period, some celebrities performed in Mandalay, the second largest city, which featured multitudes of pandals encircling the city’s centrally-located palace moat.

Mandalay, which is the cultural and business center in central Myanmar, is also known for its colorful fluvial parade of decorated floats in evening time during the water festival.
