Exports in Morocco are Concentrated: The country Could Do Way too Better than Now

Tanger Med 1 has climbed from 72nd to 55th among the world’s largest maritime facilities, according to the British magazine Container Management. Cargo throughput was up 40%.

São Paulo – Morocco’s Tanger Med 1 port ranks 55th among the world’s largest maritime facilities, according to this year’s ranking of Brtain’s magazine Container Management. Last year, the Moroccan port had placed 72nd. The information was released last Thursday (11th) by Tanger-Mediterranean Special Agency, which manages the port.

The Moroccan port had the highest increase in throughput, up 40%, followed by India’s Mundra Port, up 28%. In transhipment, Tanger Med ranks second among all ports in Africa and seventh in the Mediterranean.

According to the Tanger-Mediterranean Special Agency, the rating underscores Morocco’s position as a maritime trade hub. The agency announced that it hopes to improve Tanger Med’s rating even further.

Tanger Med has connections with 127 ports in 57 countries, including 11 ports in Latin America, seven of which are in Brazil: Itapoá, Navegantes, Rio de Janeiro, Santos, Paranaguá, Rio Grande and Suape. Out of the total container throughput at the facility, 97% concern products exports and 3% concern the domestic market.

The Moroccan port also comprises an automobile terminal divided into two sections: one is used exclusively for shipping vehicles by Renault, which established a manufacturing plant in the country in 2011. The French automaker’s dedicated area spans three hectares. Another seven hectares are used by other enterprises.
