On Monday February 9, 2015, King Mohammed VI of Morocco met in Paris with the French President Francois Hollande, following the Moroccan Monarch’s private visit to France, during which, the two leaders discussed many regional, international and bilateral affairs.

The meeting came after months of frigidity in the Franco-Moroccan relationship, and after the French government realized that it was a mistake to jeopardize its bilateral relation with Morocco following the terrorist attacks on the French newspaper Charlie Hebdo.

The two Heads of States stressed and reiterated during the meeting their strong commitment to sustain the exceptional partnership between the two countries. They also highlighted that the climate surrounding the Franco-Moroccan relationship will put a new impetus to the partnership on various aspects of cooperation due to their personal involvement and dedication to always improve and strengthen the historic ties between the two countries.

The two leaders praised during the meeting the bilateral agreement that was signed the end of January, setting new strong grounds to make the judicial cooperation between Rabat and Paris more effective and fruitful. This judicial agreement between the two countries proved to be more vital to the French national security after the cooperation between the two countries went cold and the lack of exchanging intelligence led to the deadly terrorist attacks in Paris.

The Moroccan Monarch and the French President stressed during the meeting that the two countries will work together to strengthen their efforts to combat and fight terrorism by engaging security agencies in collaborating at all levels, and to set forth an extensive program for future ministerial visits to prepare for a high-level meeting between the two governments. In addition, the upcoming Royal visit to France at the invitation of Mr. Francois Hollande will provide a basis for the enrichment of the mutual partnership.

It is clear that the economic, political and security changes in Africa, more notably in the region of Maghreb and Sahel have become a concern of many countries. The Kingdom of Morocco and France have always shown their willingness to collaborate in fighting terrorism and bring peace and stability to many countries in Africa. By encouraging investments and trade with many African nations, there will be a reduction of unemployment and job creation itself is a major factor in fighting radicalism.

The revival of the Franco-Moroccan relations was a matter of time due to the geostrategic importance of the Kingdom of Morocco, and the effectiveness of its security agencies and political stability. Such a stability encouraged many countries to cooperate with Morocco at all levels, and it has been proven that all policies implemented by the Moroccan Monarch and the government brought more stability and economic growth to the country and even opened many horizons continentally.

The wise governing of the Moroccan Monarch and his wisdom in addressing and solving conflicts and international issues earned the Kingdom the international respect and recognition, and Morocco has become mecca for all those seeking effective policies to be implemented in their countries. This also made Morocco’s proposal to solve the conflict in the Southern territories more rational and logic.
