Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation Salaheddine Mezouar held an official meeting last Monday in Spain with his Spanish counterpart Jose Manuel Garcia-Margallo.

The visit came just few days following a Spanish judge ruling that there is “evidence of genocides committed by 11 Moroccan officials against Sahraouis” and calling on Morocco to arrest and extradite the Moroccan officials to Spain to stand before justice.

A statement from Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that in the wake of the meeting “Mr. Mezouar reminded, in this context, the issue, which has become a matter of ridicule, as he explained to the Spanish media after the talks, concerning a fabricated case against eleven Moroccans citizens for events and armed clashes dating back more than four decades, which had special circumstances that have been examined by the Equity and Reconciliation Commission, which unveiled its truth, and repaired the damage caused to the alleged victims.”

Mezouar stressed that “this is a scheming to undermine Morocco in this crucial stage and harm its relations with neighboring Spain.”

According to the said statement, both Ministers also discussed “the issue of the Moroccan Sahara. Mr. Mezouar expressed, in this context, its appreciation of the evolution of this issue and Morocco’s confidence in the United Nations, the Security Council and the Envoy of the UN Secretary General’s staff to find a political solution ending this artificial conflict, which benefits to parties that are not interested in the stability of the region, Highlighting, that Morocco presented to the Sahrawi population the autonomy plan For the benefit of the people of the Moroccan Sahara, which is winner / winner formula and preserves the stability of the region, adding that the Kingdom will not accept that its citizens will forever remain sequestered in the Tindouf camps.”

Mezouar also took the opportunity to re-express “Morocco’s condolences to the Spanish people and the families of the caves explorers who died in the south of the Kingdom, adding to his counterpart that the Moroccan people share the deep sorrow following this tragic accident,” Morocco’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement said.
