The United Nations Women concluded 16-day long campaign to end violence against women in December 2015. It met with remarkable success to bring awareness in many countries hitherto untouched by such need-of-the hour gestures. The UN Women India chapter also played its part in the campaign. The authorities at different levels made their presence felt. Leading the female brigade in South India was Rema Rajeshwari of the Indian Police Service (IPS). The chief of the Ranga Reddy district Police, Telangana State, Rema Rajeshwari conducted awareness programmes on women’s safety in an effective manner. All the local police stations in Ranga Reddy district were galvanised to highlight the UN campaign to end violence against women.

It was for the first time that a campaign to end violence against women was successfully led by the top female cop Rema Rajeshwari, who took the UN programme to rural India in a big way. On 6th December 2015, Rema tweeted:

The Ranga Reddy district police campaign was ably supported by the Mandal Revenue Officers (MROs) and the Child Welfare Committee officials. Legal literacy programme for the village women was held at Parigi village where the circle inspector spoke on the women specific laws. The Chevella Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) and his team gave a talk at the Parigi Government Hostel for Girls. A safety campaign was held at PRRM Engineering College, Shahbad by the Chevella police team. The DSP and Circle Inspector, Chevella participated in an awareness session held at Jagruthi Degree College.

The SubInspector Doma was present to encouarage the girls who took part in the ‘Safety Quiz’ actively. A team of women police officers interacted with students of Vikas College, Vikarabad. The Dharoor SubIinspector Mallesham interacted with girls and gave safety tips. The The Sub Inspector Kukacherla explained ‘child safety’ measures to the students of Model School, Mjhadipur village.

The dashing female police officer, Rema Rajeshwari, IPS, addressed students from over 25 colleges of Osmania University on ‘women security.’ On 10th December 2015, a ‘Safety Rally’ marked the completion of Ranga Reddy Police’s – United Nations’ 16 Days Campaign to End Violence Against Women. This was followed by a workshop for girls on ‘women safety.’ A workshop on Human Rights was held by the Chevella police in coordination with Al Habeeb College of Engineering at Damariidda Village Gate in Chevella on the occasion of the World Human Rights Day, where Rema Rajeshwari was the chief guest. From 10th December 2015 onwards, the Village Police Officers (VPOs) have been asked to visit schools and colleges. They will continue the work initiated by the Ranga Reddy police for the safety of women and prevention of violence against women.

It is significant to note that the SHE teams in Cyberabad, which celebrated its first anniversary last month, were led by Rema Rajeshwari successfully. She was asked to lead the Ranga Reddy district police later. Rema Rajeshwari is very serious about her policing duties. The incidents of eve teasing and violence have seen a decline after the ‘mopping up’ of criminals done by the SHE teams during her tenure. Even during her training for the IPS, she put her best foot forward. Rema Rajeshwari was adjudged as the best female probationer.

Here is a police woman showing the friendly and humane face of the police to women and at the same time creating a scare among the criminals to stay away from crime. Rema Rajeshwari has a bright future. A UN policing deputation may not be a far off call.
