Rabat, Morocco (TMT)- The General Directorate of National Security, well-known under its French acronym DGSN, made a series of arrests in the kingdom in a bet to deter people from sharing fake news related the coronavirus outbreak in Morocco.

A communiqué from the DSGN said that a woman from the city of Al Jeddida was arrested as she spread lies aimed to create havoc and panic among the Moroccan population.

The woman shared a video where she pretended to be infected with the virus. Wearing a face mask, she pretended that she was in quarantine in one of Morocco’s hospitals. She also said that the situation was dire and that the authorities were lying about the real number of victims.

In another case in Marrakesh, a 44-year-old woman was also arrested after sharing a voice message on WhatsApp, where she claimed that the local authorities have imposed a state of emergency in said city, further stressing that the army was deployed all over the city.

The voice message and the video were shared heavily among the Moroccan population.
