RABAT- The Moroccan government approved a law that provides male employees with a 15-day paternity leave, a first in the Islamic and Arab world.

Morocco will become also the first African country to grant paternity leave.

This follows the government of Aziz Akhannouch’s approval of a law project to amend the basic system of public service.

The law project aims to provide male employees, who have had a child or been granted child guardianship, with a 15-day paid paternity leave.

With this, Morocco joins a handful of countries worldwide, including Germany, Finland, Estonia, and Japan, which provide paternity leave.

This step is intended to reconcile professional and personal life, share family responsibility, and lessen the burden on women.
