In an attempt to neutralize any power disparity with Morocco amidst their ongoing arms race, Spain considers purchasing American HIMARS missiles. While mainstream Moroccans tend to view Spain positively, regarding it as a trustworthy and fraternal nation, this sentiment isn’t shared by the Spanish right-wing factions who often reflect on historical events and constantly show disdain towards their southern neighbor. Morocco’s ongoing HIMARS and AH-64 Apache armament purchases are a measure to counter the unpredictability of the Algerian military regime, not against Spain.

The Spanish move comes amid Morocco receiving, in the last few days, approval from Washington to purchase 18 HIMARS missile systems and 24 Boeing AH-64 Apache attack helicopters. This acquisition strengthened Morocco’s position as a key non-NATO ally of the United States and enhanced its military capabilities, which triggered Spain’s right-wing party VOX, including others, to pressure the Spanish government to consider acquiring the HIMARS.

The High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) is a highly mobile, lightweight rocket artillery system. It is capable of launching guided and unguided artillery rockets to engage a variety of targets, including enemy positions, armored vehicles, and fortified structures. HIMARS can be quickly deployed and operated by a small crew, making it a flexible and responsive weapon system. It provides long-range precision firepower and is known for its effectiveness in both conventional and asymmetric warfare scenarios.

The Boeing AH-64 Apache is an advanced attack helicopter designed to provide close air support, anti-armor capability, and reconnaissance missions. It is equipped with advanced avionics, powerful engines, and a variety of weapon systems. The AH-64 Apache features a two-person crew and is known for its agility, survivability, and lethality on the battlefield. It can engage targets with precision-guided Hellfire missiles, rockets, and a 30mm chain gun. The Apache is widely used by several countries worldwide and has proven its effectiveness in various combat operations.
