The Marrakech First Instance Court has sentenced a notary to five years in prison and levied a fine of 200 million centimes for embezzling 7 billion centimes.

The notary is also required to return the funds to those claiming civil rights, over 25 victims.

Investigations revealed the notary’s suspicious activities were unveiled in 2021 when a financial deficit was discovered in the accounts of his office.

He used the funds in partnership with others in real estate investments. Over 25 people, including Moroccan migrants and foreigners, filed complaints against him for defrauding them. Furthermore, three banking institutions were also implicated.

The notary disappeared at the end of 2021 but was located and arrested in February in Agadir.
